Using media to build collaboration in a community

Media has the power to connect people. It is what excites us most about this line of work.

In partnership with the NyE Communities Coalition, NVC Media leverages platforms to connect community leaders and provide them with tools to better communicate and collaborate on common goals.

The results include the formation of the Lincoln County Coalition, a group of community leaders and stakeholders that meet on a monthly basis to share information and work on specific issues. The group has met since 2015, resulting in better collaboration among leaders. We take the information gleaned from these meetings and disseminate it through an email list as well as through another client, the local newspaper.

Coalition work is messy work at times and the Lincoln County Coalition is not without its challenges. People in small communities wear a lot of hats and it’s a lot to ask of people to attend yet another meeting. Attendance  has hovered between 15 and 20 people, with a lot of rotation in who is there month-to-month. We’re wrestling with how to make the meetings valuable enough for people to attend consistently and how to build more momentum around the coalition.

To those ends, we are working on new initiatives, including a new Facebook group under the newspaper’s umbrella that coalition members can share information on. We push the information through to the newspaper audience. We are also working to meet one-on-one with community members to communicate the purpose of the coalition, get their input, and learn more about their organization and efforts. As wonderful as media is at connecting people, we can’t forget about the power of direct human connection in building trust and good will.

Our media management work can then enhance those grassroots efforts.
