Revised business model for Lincoln County Record shows promising results
ALAMO, Nev. — Nevada Central Media, LLC (NVC Media), an innovative media firm serving rural publications and businesses, implemented a new business model at the Lincoln County Record, strengthening a historic, vital resource for the local community.
The Lincoln County Record now offers a digital subscription and updated rates for out-of-county print subscribers. Under the new ownership of NVC Media, the Record has attracted a substantial amount of new digital subscribers without missing a print deadline, maintaining the newspaper’s pristine 150-year record of weekly print editions.
“NVC Media is humbled to provide this critical public service. We feel blessed that it’s worked out well so far and appreciate the support from our subscribers and advertisers,” says Ben Rowley, founder of NVC Media and publisher of the Record.
When NVC Media assumed ownership of the publication on March 21, the newspaper was operating at a loss. Like many other local news outlets around the country, declining advertising revenues, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, posed a fatal risk to the paper. Within weeks, NVC Media implemented its new subscription model to ensure the long-term financial viability of the Record.
“The nuanced issues in rural areas are simply not addressed in state and national news. Without that local connection, people lose out on access to the information they need to be engaged in our community,” says Rowley. “Hopefully NVC Media and the Lincoln County Record can be an example of a way to sustain local news.”
